Accomplished comedic and spoken word artist, Chris Brooks, brings a series of stand alone workshops to St Thomas Library at which the rudiments of comic performing will be explored, examined and gently prodded. Each workshop focusses on a different aspect of comic performing
 
 
Monday 1st April, 7pm - 9.30pm £10.
DEVELOPING PERSONA
Who do we take onto the stage as performers of comedy? Is it ourselves? A version of ourselves? A subversion of ourselves? This workshop explores techniques for finding and developing a workable comic persona.
 
Monday 13th May, 7pm - 9.30pm £10.
WORKING THE ROOM
Breaking through the fourth wall and being in the moment with the audience is essential component of successful comedic performance. This workshop explores techniques for facilitating positive audience interactions and looks at how to deal with unsolicited audience contributions.
 
Monday 10th June, 7pm - 9.30pm £10.
AUTHENTICITY    

Even when spinning preposterous yarn comics need to be believable. This workshop examines the relationship between performer and the truth and how performance is enhanced by keeping it authentic.

Monday 1st July, 7pm - 9.30pm £10.
CREATING A COMIC CHARACTER

An extension of comedic persona is the comic character with a different identity to the self. Taking to the stage under an assumed identity can be liberating and lead to unforeseen results. This workshop allows participants to create a character and unleash the unexpected.

GLIMPSING THE GRIMMS – an exploration of the relevance of the Germanic fairy tale tradition to the lives we live today.

For over two centuries the Brothers Grimm’s role in adapting fairy tales from the oral to the literary tradition has had an immense impact on the imaginations of children and adults alike. But who were these enigmatic brothers and how can we find meaning and relevance in their storytelling as we confront the ambiguities and uncertainties of the present?

Chris Brooks is a storyteller, poet and comedic performer who has a passion for both the oral and literary fairy tale traditions. He has devised a series of workshops and courses aimed at sharing his love of these traditional narratives in ways which are relevant and useful to the art of living well.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE TAO TE CHING

Saturday 20th July 2019 10am-4pm, Silverton, Devon.

It should be no mystery as to why the Tao Te Ching, authored by the enigmatic Lao Tzu in the 6th century BC, has stood the test of time. It is uniquely timeless. And as we reap the consequences of our self-imposed separation from nature and struggle with unprecedented rates of change and transition, its wisdom as a text seems more relevant than ever. The Tao Te Ching offers a possible means of personally transcending the shared delusions and follies of these times whilst helping us to live in tune with ourselves, each other and the planet in ways that can contribute to a more wholesome future.
